My therapeutic approach
to counseling is a technique called Gestalt.
Individuals often feel fragmented, with at least
some perceptions, feelings, behaviors, or thoughts that are puzzling,
unrelated, or troubling. The task of Gestalt therapy is to discover,
through the personal participation of the therapist an awareness
of these interrelated and alienated aspects, and integrate them
into a whole self.
Besides using the Gestalt approach to therapy, I
am currently in training to use Psychodrama as an approach to
group therapy. I am receiving my Psychodrama training from the
Hollander Institute in Denver, Colorado.
Psychodrama defined:
Drama is the translation of a Greek word which means action, or
a thing done. Therefore, Psychodrama can be defined, as the science
which explores the ‘truth’ by dramatic methods. Conceived
and developed by Jacob L. Moreno, MD, psychodrama employs guided
dramatic action to examine problems or issues raised by an individual
(psychodrama), or a group (sociodrama). This method uses five
instruments: the stage, the audience, the director, the auxiliary
egos, and the protagonist to deal with interpersonal relationships
and private worlds. A Psychodrama has three stages, the warm-up,
the enactment, and the sharing.
Using this method provides participants with an
‘experience’ which facilitates insight, and stimulates
personal growth by clarifying issues enhancing learning, developing
and increasing physical and emotional well being. |
