If you are looking for a counselor here are some things to consider:

1. What is the issue?

Being able to tell a potential counselor the issue will help narrow down the counselors best qualified to help with your particular concern. Here are some examples of common issues: Family, couples, addictions, grief, divorce, depression, anxiety, and intimacy.

2. Do you need a counselor who is unique in some way?

Does the counselor need to be male, female, older, younger, a specific ethnic background, gay, straight, religious, non-religious, or any other unique quality.

4. Do you need a counselor in a specific geographic location?

Does the counselor need to be close to work, home, or does it matter?

5. What can I expect to pay a counselor?

The cost of counseling varies. For example, some counselors will take insurance and others will not. Some counselors have a sliding scale, others do not. In general, when you see a counselor at an agency you will pay less than a counselor who is in private practice.
